"Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as children of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church, consecrated for worship and made sharers in her mission: 'Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water and the Word." ‘Baptism’ comes from a Greek word that means to ‘plunge’ or ‘immerse’. "So for anyone who is in Christ, there is a new creation: the old order is gone and a new being is there to see." (2 Corinthians 5:17). The baptised is made a “participant in the divine life of the Trinity through sanctifying grace." (CCC 1213) Infants should be baptised as soon as possible, without any unnecessary delay. When a person is able to be baptised depends on their age. For children aged 7 or under, no formal preparation is required of them personally, but their parents/caregiver must attend at least the 1-hour Preparation Session (details below). Children aged 8 or older must undergo a period of preparation and instruction themselves, as must their parents/caregiver. The form and duration of this will vary according to the individual. Adults wishing to become Catholic do so through the parish's RCIA program. Please contact the parish office for details. Baptism Program Once the necessary preparation and documentation have been completed, the Baptism ceremony itself is able to be booked on the 2nd, 3rd or 4th Saturday of the month at 11am at any one of the 3 parish churches (subject to church and priest availability).
Parents wishing to have their child baptised should contact the Parish Office. A baptism pack (depending on child's age) will be sent to parents after the initial enquiry, requiring parents to:
attend the 1-hour Baptism Preparation Session - these are held every 1st Saturday of the month at 10.30am at Holy Cross Church
supply all documentation requested (including copy of child's birth certificate and copy of catholic parent(s) baptism certificate).
undergo any further preparation and instruction required (children aged 8 and older)
Once this has been done, parents are invited to contact the Parish Office to book a date for their child’s Baptism.
